Whats the difference between civil unions and marriage?

so its now legal for gays and lesbians to get married in NYC i live in NJ(and i'm also a lesbian) we recognize civil unions, what i want to know is whats the difference between marriage and civil union in all aspects if i legallyy married in NYC if i move somewhere that doesn't recognize same sex marriage am i still married in the state i moved to
